Pens
Ink Refill Kits

The pens I use the most – from top to bottom:

Pilot Executive Hi-Tec C – 0.3mm. I start all my sketches with this pen. Never leaves my side. Tough metal body takes a lot abuse – I have dropped it, swam with it, and generally beaten it up. This is my third one. The point is delicate but the refills are cheap. Ink is fairly waterproof though not as black as I would like – this is its only fault in my mind.

Rotring Rapidograph – 0.13mm. Before the Pilot came along this was the only pen I used for sketching including a six month travel period in which I consumed about six of these. Biggest weaknesses are the delicacy of the point and the plastic body. Someone needs to produce this in a metal body.

Rotring Rapidograph – 0.7mm. Used to give my some line variety.Loaded with Noodler’s Eel Black ink.

Kaweco AL Sport – Fine. A new addition so I am experimenting with ink. So far a great writing pen and a so-so drawing tool. Ink cartridges are short so I go through a cartridge very fast.

Lamy Safari – Extra Fine. Have broken a yellow one because the plastic body will only stand up to so much abuse of which I give plenty. Cap has a tendency to come off so I keep this in my bag. Gives big fat wet lines so I use it to fill in large areas and for some line variety. Filled with Noodler’s Bulletproof Black ink.

The Rotring color coded rings are switched so the blue one is really 0.13mm and the purple one is really a 0.7mm. Confusing even to me.

Plastic challenge
Ink Cartridge Refill

For the Fake Plastic Fish Challenge

The idea was to basically just keep your plastic items for a week (or longer), tally it up, photograph it, and answer the following questions.

My tally:
* Five big bags that merchandise was shipped in (some wool pillow covers and some clothing)
* Two ink cartridges and plastic wrapper and orange thingies from the replacement cartridges
* Fork
* Spoon
* Soda bottle cap (which is a stand in for about six others that I managed to lose track of over the week) — the bottles themselves were put in recycling bins.
* Plastic lid to a foil container that some curry came in.
* a piece of saran-type wrap that some bread came wrapped in.

Besides the missing bottle caps, not pictured is a foam plate that some noodles came on (too messy to keep and bring home for photo — I asked for a bowl but they forgot) and two bandaid-like bandages (which I’m still wearing).

The questions:
* What items could I easily replace with plastic-free or less plastic alternatives? — The plastic utensils. I actually own bamboo utensils, but had misplaced them. I found them and am now carrying them with me.

* What items would I be willing to give up if a plastic-free alternative doesn’t exist? — Hmm. I’m going to try and go cold turkey on the sodas. That may be it.

* How many of these items are from "convenience" foods that could be made from scratch with less packaging but might take more time to prepare? — None, really. I bought the curry at a restaurant, which I’m sure would cost less to make at home and certainly be more work.

* What items are essential and seem to have no plastic-free alternative? — If I have stuffed shipped to me I have little to no control over the amount of plastic. I can ask for plastic-reduced shipping, but individual items are probably still going to be in plastic. Are they essential? Some are, a lot aren’t. I don’t really see any plastic-free alternatives to the ink cartridge situation. I’m a bit leery of having them refilled, I killed a print head (and consequently the printer) that way.

* What lifestyle change(s) might be necessary to reduce my plastic consumption? — I’ve already started carrying reusable utensils. While not represented in this tally so much, I do eat out a lot usually, and could ask that take-out stuff be put in my own containers. Or, of course, I could actually cook at home. And it’s probably time to put a moratorium on buying stuff.

* What one plastic item am I willing to give up or replace this week? — The utensils are definitely out this week, and the soda (to cut down on plastic, but mainly at this point because it’s crap and I don’t need it).

* What other conclusions, if any, can I draw? — I lucked out this week, this is a relatively light plastic use week. Often I have a lot more.

After using a roller-ball-pen for some time I got tired of changing ink-cartridge all the time. Now I am using my old Lamy Al-Star again. Due to the fact that it had some rough times I had to buy a new nib and furthermore got myself a converter and an inkwell.

I refilled the converter the evening before; isn’t it scary how much ink is left after some usual writing, a test and assambling information for learning?

The words you see below are actually from the information-assambly for my religion-test. Topic is Christology with a special focus on the resurrection of Jesus and with that a special focus on Rudolf Bultmanns and Marxens model of demythologization.

It is somewhat funny that the words "[...]Leben ohne Maß bliebe ohne Konsequenzen[...]" / "Life without responsibility for ones own acting wouldn’t take any consequences". Looking at financial crysis this seems to be sad reality..

Unlike the Platinum refillable highlighters, in which you simply change ink cartridges without changing the felt tip, here the ink and tip are part of a self-contained refill unit, making it very easy to change when the ink is exhausted.

Common Nerd Knowledge: Inkjet printers suck.

They have a lifespan of about 6 months, so why not put the printer to a good nerdy use after it expires?

Our network printer and scanner
Laser Toner Cartridges

A closeup on an IKEA ‘rack’ in my ‘den’, which holds our network printer, scanner, network server (‘ayeka’) and some hanging files.

The printer (‘azaka’) is an HP LaserJet 4100TN network laser, which we can print to from anywhere else on our home LAN. I bought this from my office when they were engaged in a bout of new printer-buying in late 2005, and were selling off the older machines. The printer cost me somewhat less than a new toner cartridge for it, though thankfully at time of writing I haven’t had to replace one yet.

The scanner is a Canon LiDE 35 USB model – currently connected directly to ‘tenchi’ (my main desktop PC), though one day I want to try linking it to ‘ayeka’ running a SANE scanner server, so we could scan from any other PC on the network. That’s not exactly high on the list, though.

Good Morning!

30 Days of Gratitude: Day 8 – I am grateful for hot coffee in the morning.

Is your TV on or off? Is your microwave oven and coffeemaker using electricity even when you aren’t using those appliances? Did you know that mobile phone chargers are using electricity even when they’re plugged in?

www.thedailygreen.com/living-green/definitions/Phantom-Load
A "phantom load" is any appliance or electronic gizmo that uses energy even when turned off. Some people call them "vampire appliances" or "energy vampires." Phantom energy is drained by items including computers that still use power even when they’re asleep, power tools that still drain electricity when the battery’s charging, and anything with a built-in clock.

If your home is typical, you live with 20 vampires. They add about 0 to your annual energy bill, according to Cornell University. That’s because the "off" button doesn’t really mean "off" these days; instead, it means "standby." In fact, your TV with remote control likely uses more energy during the 20 hours a day that it’s turned off and in a "standby power" state than it does during the hours you watch the tube.

The upshot, according to Cornell, is we’re using the equivalent of seven electrical generating plants just to supply vampires that are turned "off."

Here are some clues to identify your energy suckers: They’re appliances with remote controls, such as TVs, VCRs and audio equipment. They feature a continuous digital display — like those glowing clocks on stoves. They feature rechargeable batteries, such as cordless phones (which use energy even after the battery is charged). And they’re appliances with external power supplies, such as inkjet printers and iPod chargers.

How can you combat vampires?
•Kill vampires by using a power strip sold at hardware stores, home-supply superstores, discount stores and the like. Step 1: Plug all components of a computer or home entertainment system into a power strip. Step 2: Turn off the power strip with a single switch. Anything plugged into the strip now is truly turned off.
•Unplug "vampires." Unplug rarely used appliances. Ditto for chargers that aren’t in use. Unplug the TV, toaster oven and other well-used appliances before you leave. If it’s not plugged in, it can’t suck energy.

A detail shot of our new G9 Laser Gaming Mouse. With the G9, you can even adjust the weight and balance of the mouse. Underneath the grip there is a weight tuning sled. Check it out…push on the spring loaded cartridge and it pops out, reveling four spaces for the weights. The tune it until it feels just right. Some feel more weight (inertia) provides greater precision…Other prefer lighter mice for extended gaming sessions. Either way…we hope people like it as much as the G5 and MX518 =)

ink!
Printer Ink Cartridges

A Photo a Day – May 13, 2010.

Ink. It’s probably one of the most expensive liquids on the planet. On single cartridge of black ink for my printer is .00 after sales tax. I can’t find numbers anywhere on the actual amount of ink that’s in a cartridge, but guessing by the size of it, it can’t be more than a fluid ounce. That equates to about 04.00 per gallon. So now gas prices don’t look so bad after all (we’re about .80-.50/gal in Maryland). Even if you fill up more than you do replacing ink, I think you still come out ahead.

The only thing that may be more expensive than ink would be certain medications. I know that Epogen is highly expensive. A quick search on Google shows that a 1mL vial is going for around .00. That equates out to roughly 1,725.00 per gallon!

Think about this the next time you hit "PRINT".

Cartridge: Don’t Drop Me!
Printer Ink Cartridges

Don’t drop your cartridge, as it might break and spill it’s ink all over your floor. And then you’re in serious trouble – printer ink is even worse than the ancient ink, and is not removable from your floor.

So if you like a colorful floor, go ahead, drop a few. But if you want to keep your floor as it is, better watch out ;)

I can’t find the proper refill cartridges for the Pilot Petit1 pen, so my brother nicely offered to send me a little kit to refill the quickly emptying cartridge I have. I could have sworn I said to send this to my home addy, but he sent it to my job. There was much explaining to do that day.
